BHH’s commitment to our guests as we navigate COVID-19

Your safety is critically important to us.

We are happy to announce we are open and accepting new reservations

The Black Hawk has been a place of respite for over 167 years, and while there are surely still trying times ahead, we are confident we can safely welcome guests to the historic hotel.

However, it’s clear that the hospitality industry is suffering from the effects of COVID-19 worldwide, and we’re not immune. The effects are felt even in our small town, by our small hotel, and by the 20+ people who are employed by the hotel. We fully support the shop local movement, and encourage you to “stay local” as well. By doing so, you are helping the second longest continuously operating hotel in the country keep its doors open for the next 167 years. We sincerely appreciate your loyalty to our independent, locally-owned hotel during this tough time.

In response to the uncertainty ahead, we are working hard to broaden our offerings into new areas with the same level of service and celebration of community that you know us for. We are now offering extended stays in a response to community demand, as well as broadening our offerings as a small events venue. We want to extend a special invitation to couples whose wedding plans have been impacted by COVID-19 to host a small celebration at The Black Hawk.

Please find below the new policies we’re implementing with our reopening to remain committed to the safety of our guests and staff. And please consider this a personal invitation to book your next stay with us!

We continue to wish you well and look forward to seeing you again.

New Safety Policies

  • Introducing Self Check-In process to reduce human contact
  • Guest rooms will be booked with at least one empty room between occupied rooms as much as possible. It might just get you a free upgrade!
  • Hotel staff will continue to be on-premise on a limited basis, and available by phone/email 24 hours a day
  • Housekeeping will not enter guest rooms until 48 hours after guest check-out
  • Increased deep cleaning and surface cleaning throughout the hotel with proper disinfecting agents
  • More sanitizing stations added for guests and staff
  • Practicing the art of social distancing, and encouraging our guests to do the same

New Self Check-In

After booking, guests will be emailed a confirmation as well as a self-guided check-in process. This will include your room number, parking instructions, registration card and where to find your room keys. Simply leave the room keys in your room at check-out, and we will email you your receipt.

Flexible Cancellation Policy

We will continue to stipulate our 24-hour cancellation policy, giving you the freedom to cancel or reschedule your reservation without fees up to 24 hours before check-in.

Our on-site café is closed until further notice; We encourage you to have breakfast and coffee at the many local cafes downtown that are still open for carryout. We’ll be happy to make recommendations.

Closure Update

April 3, 2020

We have extended our closure to April 30 to follow the recommendations of state health officials.

However, in an effort to serve our community, we have made the decision to open the retro motel to healthcare professionals who need a place to safely quarantine. We will be donating half of the revenue from these reservations back to the local health system’s foundation. If you are a healthcare professional and would like to make a reservation, please call the hotel at 319-277-1161.

Thank you for your understanding and we hope you continue to stay safe and healthy!

A letter from our owner, Mark Kittrell:

March 19, 2020

Dear Guests: It’s with heavy hearts we have decided to temporarily suspend new bookings at The Black Hawk Hotel to protect you and our staff during COVID-19. Rest assured, our small but mighty historic hotel has weathered many tough times in its 167 years; we will get through this too.

Along with many other small businesses, we are coordinating with local and state health officials’ recommendations on when to reopen (currently March 31, 2020). We will continue to answer calls and emails during this time, so please feel free to reach out.

One way you can support our small, independent hotel is by purchasing a gift certificate for a future stay—they never expire! Just call or email us and we’ll mail it to you.

And to our country, community, guests and staff alike: our hearts are with all of you during this tough time. We look forward to hosting you back at The Black Hawk soon!

Until we see each other again,

Mark Kittrell and The Black Hawk Team
